British Expats May Lose Their Homes in Spain, 05 | 01 | 2010 - Noticia

Almost a dozen British expats residing in Spain have been told that there homes will be bull-dozed before spring of this year. The residents, all served with demolition notices, have promised to protest against the razing of their homes.

The residences are all located in Albox in Almeria located in south-east Spain. The demolition orders come in the wake of Spanish politicians protesting the over-development of coastal areas with homes such as those occupied by the Brits living there.

The campaign wages on against the local town hall which issued the appropriate building permits for the houses. However, the building permits became null and void when a local court determined that the higher regional government had jurisdiction on the matter.

The British expats are fighting back, however, launching a campaign of their own claiming they knew nothing about their houses being deemed as illegal. One local resident said that he knew nothing of an illegal building permit until the demolition notice was handed to him by a police officer on December 22.

Now, expatriate support group, Abusos Urbanisticos Almanzora No (Auan) is getting involved and helping the residents file an appeal to save their houses. President of Auan, Maura Hillen said that the group will fight the demolition orders under the premise that the residents were never notified that the building permits had been revoked and deemed illegal.
