EU residents still fear registering on their local ‘Padron’ in Spain

Typically, 01 | 02 | 2010 - Noticia

Most of the EU residents in Spain live along the costas

Málaga has been named among the Spanish provinces to be home to most EU pensioners.

90% of the EU residents in Spain aged over 55 are concentrated in just eight Spanish provinces and most of the people remain to be placed on the ‘padrón’ local census.

Málaga, Almería and Alicante between them make up two thirds of the total, and the rest are on the Baleares, Las Palmas, Tenerife, Girona and Murcia, according to the data from the Elcano Royal Instutute. Andalucía represents 48% of the all EU citizens who live in Spain.

21% of the 2.5 million EU immigrants who live in Spain are retired, and in most cases they have not registered on the local census for fear of paying more tax, or because though lack of language they have not integrated and don’t understand the requirement, or thinking that by doing so they will lose some rights in their home country.
