Costa too hot for winter benefits

Costa Blanca News, 26 | 10 | 2010 - Noticia

Complaints over Britons receiving winter fuel benefit while basking in the sun

As coalition politicians in the UK debate whether winter fuel benefits should face cuts in welfare reform plans, expats living abroad could be shielded due to EU laws, including pensioners living in Almería.

New figures released by the UK’s Pensions Minister, Steve Webb, showed that 65,000 pensioners living abroad received the payment last year, more than double the number who received it five years ago.

The statistics also state that more than half of the expat claimants live in Spain in areas such as Almería where the average daily temperature is reportedly around 18 degrees.

The benefit last year was 250 pounds to those aged over 60 and 400 pounds to those over 80. Yet while some Brits at home may see the axe fall on free warmth in winter, a spokesperson for the Department of Work and Pensions quoted in The Telegraph said the government could do nothing about payments to Britons in EU countries since they constituted a requirement of the European Commission.
