...British Ambassador Simon Manley and colleagues from the Alicante Consulate were out on the Costa Blanca as part of a global campaign to increase numbers registered to have a voice in the ‘Brexit’ ballot. The ‘leave’ or ‘remain’ referendum over EU membership must be held by the end of 2017 and the government is supporting the Electoral Commission in its bid to get more expats registered to vote – but if the June prediction is correct, the campaign is even more urgent. Currently, people who left the UK less than 15 years ago can vote in the constituency where they were last on the electoral register. ... despite an ongoing campaign, it appears increasingly unlikely the promised ‘Votes for Life’ legislation will be enacted in time to give everyone a say in the referendum. ... Mr Manley wanted to assure people that London did care and was interested in the opinion of expats in Spain and their concerns over the future membership of Europe.

The most obvious problem ... would not be Brits already living abroad, but Brits wanting to move abroad – which, of course, would have an impact on expat businesses as the steady stream of Brits heading to Spain to live could become in danger of drying up.
