A new period opens at the beginning of April to register on the electoral census

The Partido Popular in Mijas has called on the local foreign population to take an active part in local politics and vote in the upcoming municipal elections which take place on May 22.

The official period for a foreign national resident in a Spanish municipality expired on January 31, but there will be another period open, from 4-11 April, for those who are registered with their local Town Hall as a local resident to apply to vote in the municipal election. The PP points out that you must have registered at your Town Hall before January 31 2011 to be able to do this.

The procedure to be followed in this case is to apply to the Town Hall for the ‘reclamación al censo’ form and present it with your original current passport. The application can be made before the period opens in April.

It’s understood that the Mijas PP will be distributing an informative leaflet on the matter in English in the area.

The PP’s Mario Bravo, who is vice-secretary for urbanisations and foreigners in the Mijas branch, noted in a press conference on Monday that 42% of the close to 82,000 registered population in Mijas are foreign nationals. The vast majority of the 34,100 foreign residents in Mijas are from European Union countries.

Bravo was accompanied at the press conference by Kaly Galache, a native British resident who works in the PP’s urbanisations and foreigners department in Mijas.
