Expats pack Arboleas town hall to hear meeting in English

Costa Almería News | Noticia

The first plenary meeting ever to be translated simultaneously into English in the province of Almería was held in Arboleas last week before a packed council chamber.

An expectant crowd of mostly expats sat to hear mayor Cristóbal Granados, from the PSA party, deliver his first keynote speech since winning the local elections on May 22.

Sr Granados said the decision to translate proceedings had been in response to calls for more transparency at the council.

He took the opportunity to lambaste his predecessor, Angel Martin, claiming the council had inherited a raft of problems from the previous socialist-run administration. He said the PSOE-led council drafted a town plan document (PGOU) in 2009 that contained so many errors the Junta de Andalucía refused to approve the plans.
