The new mayor of Vera, Almería, has vowed to find a solution to the plight of the Priors, the retired expat couple whose home was demolished by the Junta more than three years ago.

Jose Carmelo Jorge Blanco became Vera council leader on June 11 after beating rival and long-standing mayor Félix López at last May's local elections.

In an exclusive interview with Costa Blanca News, Sr Jorge Blanco said he intended to hold a meeting with the couple in due course to discuss their situation.

Although he would not commit himself, he said compensating the Priors for the loss of their home would be an option. "What happened to the Priors should never happen again. We will do whatever needs to be done and to do it so that we are both (the Priors and the council) happy with the outcome," he said.

The €560,000 villa belonging to expat couple Helen and Len Prior was bulldozed in January 2008 after the regional government revoked the couple's building licence, which had been issued by the local council. Since then, the couple have been living in a converted garage on the same plot of land.
