New councillors were allocated departments on Tuesday by Green party (Los Verdes) mayor Monserrate Guillén with the political situation in the municipality still on a knife edge.

Next Monday's full council meeting is the first acid test for the coalition council made up of Socialists (PSOE), Greens and CLARO who have 10 seats between them. The Partido Popular (PP) has 12 seats and the coalition need the support of CLR (three seats) to get the go-ahead for their plans.

CLR rejected joining the local government but party chief Pedro Mancebo vowed they would support the mayor.

Sr Mancebo said he had the 'key to governing the city in his pocket' and would use it to reach agreements with the mayor based on consensus. It is unclear whether the CLR-CLARO alliance is still ongoing after CLARO president Bob Houliston agreed to join the local government.
