For the first time Rincón de la Victoria is to have its own municipal Foreigners’ Department in response to a local pressure group’s demands.

“The Association of New Residents and Foreigners originally started as a lobby to the Town Hall, asking them to provide a help service for new residents and foreigners in the municipality,” says the organisation’s president, Aprile Winterstein. “Francisco Salado from the Partido Popular, was immediately attracted to the idea and included it in his electoral campaign. As the new Mayor, he has assigned a councillor to create the new service.”

Following confirmation that the new department has been given the green light, the Association of New Residents and Foreigners will hold its first Annual General Meeting on 24th of June at 4.30 pm in Restaurante Jardin del Agua.

Councillor

The responsibility for establishing Rincón de la Victoria’s first Foreigners’ department has been handed to the councillor Carmen Millán, a well known lawyer from the town. “We have already had a long conversation and she is very enthusiastic,” says Winterstein.

For her part, Millán tells SUR in English that she is “very excited and eager to start work.” She says: “I am looking forward to launching the Foreign Residents’ department as it’s a pioneering initiative for Rincón de la Victoria.”

Why does she feel she was chosen for this position? “I think it would better to ask Francisco (the Mayor). But I’d like to say that I’m at the absolute disposition of all foreign residents so that we can, between us, make this ambitious project a success. We’ll provide general advice for foreigners living in the town and ensure all municipal bureaucratic channels are accessible at every level within the Town Hall. We will also provide information on cultural and social activities to encourage greater integration into the place where they have chosen to live”.
